Mikimoto Honeycomb Earrings

Posted by Keller & George at 12:00:00 AM in Mikimoto (29)

Trying to find a befitting gift for a woman you love (mother, wife, girlfriend or a female relative) may be a bit of a problem especially if they are taste-specific. One thing is for sure though: jewelry sets a good mood for appreciation any day, any time. To achieve this, one needs to find a suitable jeweler who is original and has a unique product. Mikimoto has received numerous praises globally for having adorable and unique products that a woman can find hard to resist.

The company was founded by Kokichi Mikimoto who nurtured world’s first cultured beads and later went ahead and established his first Black South Sea pearl in 1914, which gave the pearl industry a new dimension. He ensures that each pearl harvested is so unique that it is termed as its own ‘fingerprint.' Certain qualities are considered when assessing superiority of the beads:

1. Luster, quantity of brightness a jewel replicates from both its exterior luminosity and the profound replication of its inner brightness. Only a bright spark bares the Mikimoto name.

2. Outward perfection (fewer exterior imperfections denote a higher quality, more valuable pearl) is incredibly important.

3. Shape (most pearls are rounded, but with Mikimoto, unique shapes like buttons, teardrop, oval and baroque are also familiar) is also a factor in choosing superior pearls.

4. Color (this mostly depends on color of oyster that produces them). High quality pearls have awe-inspiring colors.

5. Size (pearls are measured in millimeters, therefore size has absolutely nothing to do with its quality).

Mikimoto consistently gives us the most amazing pearl jewelry.  Visit with us at Keller and George and let us show you these pieces up close and personal!

Mikimoto Morning Dew Collection

Posted by Keller & George at 9:00:00 AM in Mikimoto (29)

Pearls have always been symbols of elegance and grace. Combine this with the deep beauty of sapphires, and you'll have a piece of jewelry that can outlast time itself. This is what Mikimito's Morning Dew collection offers. The combination of the pearl's whiteness and the sapphire's blue hue is as classic as designs can get. The collection consists of separate earrings and a necklace that can be combined into a dazzling matching set.

The Morning Dew earrings feature a set of dangling Akoya pearls each being 8mm in size. Each pearl hangs from a column of 3 sapphires that add up to .30 carats in total size. These precious stones are set on an 18K white gold mount that will accommodate for even the most sensitive ears. The matching Morning Dew necklace has the same design. The 8mm Akoya pearl sits on the bottom of a row of blue sapphires totaling .22 carats. The pendant is also set on an 18K mount that loops around an 18K link chain as well. The link chain comes in tow sizes: 16 inch and 18 inch. Each if these pieces can be worn on its own or worn as a set. Either way, the resulting effects are stunning.

The Akoya oyster is the smallest pearl-producing oyster in the world, making its pearls relatively perfect for jewelry. The value of each cultured Akoya pearl is determined based on many factors that include its color, size, and even shape. Akoya pearls are renowned for their shine and the proximity of their shape to a perfect sphere. These characteristics not only make the Morning Dew collection as beautiful as they are coveted, but they also make them the classic pieces of jewelry even woman should have.

Pearl jewelry for weddings

Posted by Keller & George at 3:00:00 AM in Mikimoto (29)

Most brides prefer diamond jewelry for their weddings, but, in truth, pearl jewelry is a better match to the elegance, timeliness, and purity white of bridal gown and accessories. Exclusive pearls like Mikimoto are unblemished, smooth, elegant, and have this mysterious air to them, which make them an ideal bridal accessory. We talk about purity, classic, and beauty in weddings, and those are the exact traits of pearls. On the contrary, diamonds can be lavish, opulent, and embarrassingly proud, which can ruin the wedding’s spiritual sanctity. Pearl jewelry is also flexible. Necklaces can be single or multi-layered strands, while earrings can be solo pearl, or two-drops, or even accented with precious metal. For a little fancy style, you can opt for black or pink pearls, either which perfectly complements the white gown.

Why pearls can be better than diamonds

Posted by Keller & George at 10:20:00 AM in Mikimoto (29)

Diamonds are arguably taken as the premium gemstone of all. Yet pearls can give it a run for the money, especially if you’re talking about Mikimoto. The brand is renowned for unblemished cultured white, black, and Akoya pearls, and has been worn by Hollywood celebrities or royalty alike. But aside from elegance, pearls have some advantages over diamond jewelry. Take for instance, versatility. You can wear pearls as a multi-layered necklace or a solitaire stone or long strand or choker. A diamond necklace is fixed. Another pearl advantage is, you can wear different styles for your pearl jewelry, whether you’re attending a formal evening or simply to adorn your corporate suit. In short, pearls are like your best pals: they weave in and out of your life, and it’s always a welcome break from something that is said to be forever.

Which pearl is for you?

Posted by Keller & George at 1:13:53 AM in Mikimoto (29)

Pearl jewelries are more reserved but distinct than diamond jewelry. Women who wear pearls are seen as more confident, less vain, someone who speaks her mind. However, choosing pearls is more complicated these days with a slew of varieties available in the luxury market now. For Mikimoto, there's the Akoya, a pearl known for its brilliance and luster. On the other hand, the Black South Sea features an impressive deep black display. It's perfect for formal evenings and cocktail parties. Meanwhile, the White South Sea evokes subtle hue changes when it comes into contact with different gradients of light. This pearl is best for day events. The Golden South Sea is another pearl variety that showcases a rare champagne color. If you want to stand out, this pearl is for you.

Japanese inventions that changed the world

Posted by Keller & George at 3:00:15 AM in Mikimoto (29)

Japan, the land of the rising sun, is also the land of inventions and innovations that changed the world across the years. Here are just a few of the stuff they introduced to the world and we love Japan for them. Electronic calculators were invented by Casio in 1957, which help many of us to do away with counting fingers. Instant ramen, a college staple or a quick meal, was developed by Nissin Food in 1971. Electric rice cooker---no more burnt rice---was invented in 1940 (right in the middle of World War 2!) by Mitsubishi Electric. Karaoke, which brought us also obnoxious drinking nights, was first introduced globally by the Japanese. There's another invention that not everybody knows was developed by Japan: cultured pearls, which allow us today to create stunning pearl jewelry. Mikimoto invented the production of hemispherical pearls in 1896.

One Act of Man

Posted by Keller & George at 10:50:00 AM in Mikimoto (29)

Rarely does a man fully realize the impact of his actions. Mikimoto Kokichi, founder of the acclaimed Japanese house of cultured pearls, endured the countless unsuccessful attempts of culturing pearls and pressed on with his passion to create the perfect round cultured pearl. He may not have realized that his persistence would start a revolutionary market on cultured pearls. Nevertheless, it did. Kokichi’s remains the top producer of the most excellent quality pearls from saltwater farms such as Akoya and South Sea to the rather interesting baroque and conch pearls. When he publicly burned tons of low quality pearls to show his commitment to the craft, this laid the foundation for the company’s strict adherence to the highest quality in the craft. Just one man, and such small acts, and yet somehow as he acted them, turned a whole industry around.

Nurtured by the Ocean, Tested by Fire

Posted by Keller & George at 3:00:00 AM in Mikimoto (29)

How far would a company go to prove its commitment to excellence? Mikimoto went as far as a publicized destruction of low-quality pearls. Kokichi Mikimoto, the founder of today’s largest pearl manufacturing house, was set to show the world that his company only offered the highest quality of gems to adorn the delicate necks of women around the world. In 1932, when low quality pearls started to proliferate in the market, Mikimoto burned thousands of poor quality pearls in front of the Chamber of Commerce. His message was simple yet resounding: “I would rather destroy a pearl than sell one of low quality.” Being the person credited for producing the world’s first cultured pearls, Kokichi Mikimoto sent a wave of admiration for his high standards – a commitment which is being continued today by the next generation of Mikimoto pearl experts.

Mikimoto’s House of Pearls

Posted by Keller & George at 2:00:00 AM in Mikimoto (29)

Since Kokichi Mikimoto revolutionized the pearl culture industry, the trade of pearls has grown into a much more intricate science. Mikimoto’s own set of precious pearls have grown with these developments through the years. The Akoya pearls still remain the favorite of the brand. These 3-10 mm pearls produced by Japan’s Akoya oysters were the first spherical pearls cultured by Mikimoto, or anybody for that matter. These are the most popular of pearl type, which is the traditional symbol of elegance and beauty. Second to Akoya pearls are the Black South Sea Pearls with their breathtaking colors that range from slate gray to silver and pistachio, peacock green and midnight black overtoned with green, rose and blue. A whole array of other interesting options such as the playful baroque, the large immaculate White South Sea Pearls, and the fiery and rare Conch Pearls gives the pearl connoisseur so many choices to pick from. The Legacy of a Dream

Posted by Keller & George at 12:25:00 PM in Mikimoto (29)

The most valuable pearls come from the bellies of nature; the most beautiful ones are grown by Mikimoto. The pure splendour of pearls have always entranced Japanese entrepreneur Kokicki Mikimoto. In his philosophy, such object of beauty should never be hidden but shared to the whole world. This was Kokichi’s lifelong dream – to adorn every woman’s neck with the loveliest pearls. In pursuit of this dream, Mikimoto made his first attempt to culture Akoya pearls in Shinmei Inlet during the late 1880’s. It took him almost 20 years before he finally cultured his first spherical pearls, building a name for himself in the process. Mikimoto’s shop in Ginza, Tokyo soon branched out in London, and then Paris, New York, Shanghai, Bombay and other major fashion cities all over the globe. A century and two decades hence, the Mikimoto brand remains the most trusted label for elegant luxury pearl jewelries. In a sense, Kokichi did fulfil his dream, and continues to do so through the Mikimoto Company.

The beauty of black

Posted by Keller & George at 9:00:25 AM in Mikimoto (29)

Tahitian pearls are commonly called black pearls. These rare wonders are produced by the black-lipped pearl oyster. Cultured black pearls are a rarity as they could only be produced one at a time, unlike their white counterparts, which can be farmed for mass production. This contributes to the high value given to the Black pearl. The pearl’s value is also commonly equated with the person to whom it is presented as a gift. As rare as it is, the Black Pearl is not impossible to find. Mikimoto offers a wide array of jewelry that showcase the beauty of cultured black pearls that are guaranteed to be authentic. Among these is the company’s Matched Set Black South Sea Special Edition, each set is composed of a lovely strand with 18K white gold and diamond Mikimoto signature clasp and 9mm stud earring set. This collection is for those who want to make the beautiful even more so.

Come visit Keller & George's on Millmont Street and get these rare wonders called Mikimoto.
